| Description | Purity >95%. Methylmalonate (MMA) is a dicarboxylic acid that can be derived from methylmalonyl-coenzyme A (methylmalonyl-CoA), which is converted to succinyl-CoA in an enzymatic reaction that requires vitamin B12 . A deficiency in vitamin B12 prevents the normal conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA, resulting in increased levels of MMA in the plasma and urine. Inherited metabolic disorders that prevent the metabolism of methylmalonyl-CoA can also result in elevated MMA levels. Excess MMA produces an acidemia that can interfere with normal neurological development. |
